So, SBC Ameritech disconnected the telephone line here (which powers the DSL line that runs this site) at 11:17 AM Central time). At around 8PM, the ADSL magically started working again, but, my telephone is still dead as a rock. SBC has acknowledged that the problem appears to be on their end, and they were happy to promise a technician by 5PM *tomorrow*. They clearly did something, because before if I dialed the house line, it rang and rang and rang. Now you get a busy signal (and the DSL works too). Wierd.
